David Wallimas vs Team GB

One of the reason’s you haven’t heard much from me lately is that I’ve been working….flat out.

My journey into film continues, and the opportunity to make a mini documentary with the very funny and handsome David Walliams meeting the Team GB swim team came along.

Here is the result. It goes live today.

I think Olympic fever is about to hit the country..

Go on! Join Our Greatest Team.

Exposure

So my journey into film has officially begun. Shot this little number for the latest issue of www.twenty-6.co.uk.

I have directed a few things before, but actually picked up the camera myself this time. Watch this space. Definitely something I want to be doing more of. Shot on the Canon 5d Mark 2.

Hope you like it.

I am Sarah Young

Sometimes it’s fun to just pick up a camera, hit the streets, and shoot. No big production. No check list making sure that every little detail has been sorted. No location permits. No massive equipment van. No pre-ordered lunch with individual dietary requirements catered for. No 2nd and 3rd assistant…phew….you get the drift..

So when DJ Sara Young called me up a month or so ago wondering if I would like to shoot the cover of her up and coming EP, I thought it sounded like fun.

The plan was simple – first we hit Brixton Market to shoot in one of the colourful african shops…then Edgeware Rd outside one of the lebanese restaurants..

This kind of approach requires more bravery and faith than when everything is perfectly planned. As a result it’s much more risky, but also can be a lot of fun. You also have to rely on people’s goodwill.Luckily we got lots of that – but then it helps when your subject is funny, talented and curvaceously beautiful.

“I am Sarah Young” is released on the 29th of March in assosiation with Adidas.

The blossoming Alexandra Burke

Some days are full of surprises and my day with the gorgeous Alexandra Burke was one of them. She is down to earth, funny and with a laugh that gets everyone going. We had a wonderful day capturing her softer side for the cover shoot of Fabulous Magazine (out on the 18th of February).

I also thought you might like to see a few behind the scenes images from the day. I decided to use ring flash as my main light to make the flowers and her skin pop, but softened it by using a couple of fill lights reflecting from the walls and ceiling.

And the location? A palace in Ealing, London W5…another surprise.

Beverly Hills Baby…

The Beverly Hills Hotel, Los Angeles.

This iconic candy coloured hotel in pastel pink and pistachio green, really is one of THE places in the world to be. Whether it’s lounging in one of the cabanas by the pool, or sipping cocktails in the Polo Lounge, the celebrity guest list is seriously A class and includes stars such as Elizabeth Taylor, Frank Sinatra, John Wayne and Marylin Monroe.

I was one lucky lady to be given access to shooting at this truly inspirational hotel for the Dorchester Collection. I even got to stay in one of their suites. The height of luxury.

You can see more shots from this shoot on my website under the advertising section.

Oh – and Russel Crowe and Kanye West were there too….

Loafing around with Dune..

I like a man in loafers – they really do represent a lazy summer lifestyle so far removed from a freezing Friday in February. Really enjoyed shooting the Spring/Summer 1012 Campaign for Dune shoes.

Campari anyone?

The loveliest of all lovely lenses.

Whilst showing you one of my latest shots for the TK Maxx spring campaign, I thought I might talk a little bit about lenses.

It’s easy to think that to take great pictures (especially portraits),  all you need is a great camera. Actually you don’t – you can have a pretty crappy camera…what you really, really need is a great lens.

This was shot on the L series Canon 85 mm lens. With amazing optical quality, it can also shoot at the incredibly low aperture of 1.2. This gives you the ability to blow the background right out of focus and to shoot at very low light levels. It also gives you a look of great depth and cinematic quality.

Lovely!
