CELEBRATING THE BEAUTY OF NATURAL AFRO HAIR

Afro hair straightening is a multi billion dollar industry. Black women have been spending a fortune on their hair – through wigs, hair pieces and straightening potions. Unfortunately, once it’s chemically straightened, the hair becomes brittle and breaks away – and after years of weaving in hair pieces, many women are left close to bald. It is rumoured that even the iconic Naomi Campbell suffers from this due to the fashion industry's persistent preference for European hair aesthetics.

So why this large scale rejection of natural state afro hair? One reason might be the lack of fashion and film icons rocking this authentic look. And let's not forget that the hair product aisle has long leaned towards European hair types, leaving afro hair a bit in the shadows.

Interestingly, even the legendary Martin Luther King himself encouraged African Americans to keep their hair au naturel as a way to honour their heritage.

Afro hair does not get the credit and praise it deserves. Styled correctly, it lends itself to stunning bold shapes, and is a complete show-stopper. Could leaving afro hair natural be a small revolutionary act? I think so. That is why I wanted to create this series.

The good news is that there is change in the air (or should that be…hair:)
